What began as a casual conversation at a local jobs fair proved to be a major turning point for one local woman, setting her on the path towards developing her skills and boosting her self-confidence.

Julie Lugar first met members of the team responsible for delivery of the Opportunity Goole project, funded by Goole Town Deal, at a jobs fair at Goole Market Hall back in March 2023. At that time, she was reluctant to access any further training as, while claiming Universal Credit, she’d completed several courses and work experience placements that had left her feeling ‘disillusioned’. 

Julie’s employment history mainly consisted of factory roles that she’d undertaken before raising her son, who’s now an adult. With limited computer skills, low self-confidence and an innate fear of trying anything new, Julie faced major challenges when it came to re-entering the world of work. There was an expectation from the local Job Centre that she should be able to carry out online searches for a suitable job, but she struggled to use computers.

Thankfully, since having that brief, initial conversation with advisers from the Opportunity Goole team more than 18 months ago, Julie has been able to access ongoing support and advice that has enabled her to gradually develop the essential digital skills that she needs, and is also learning that change can be a positive thing. She’s now able to apply for jobs online and attach documents, as well as completing her Universal Credit commitments and ‘to-do list’ without needing one-to-one support. 

Belinda Blackburn, one of several Personal Advisors from the Opportunity Goole team who have supported Julie during the last 18 months, said: “Julie is now able to work on a computer independently, but will occasionally ask for something new to be explained to her. As her skills and self-confidence have increased, she’s become much more willing to learn something new. For example, she has mastered using comparison websites, which have helped her make an informed decision about her energy provider and switch to a better deal. From initially refusing to go to any of the courses that Goole Adult Learning Centre offers, Julie now is one its strongest advocates. In fact, she even encourages others to attend, and is able to explain the benefits of the Lets Talk Money and Digital Skills courses that are on offer there to other people who may benefit from them.”

Belinda added: “Julie’s attitude to learning has undergone a remarkable shift. Her story demonstrates how tailored support and accessible learning opportunities can empower individuals to overcome barriers, build their confidence and embrace lifelong learning, as well as any challenges that life throws at them.”
